n Architecture Inc. was commissioned to design the Mr. Lube and Mary’s Brown locations in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. The proposed development features a 3 bay, 630 square metre GFA Mr. Lube- quick lube oil and tire change shop and a 203 square metre Mary’s Brown’s quick service restaurant with drive-thru, covering a 5,313 square meters site area with a gross floor area of 833 square meters.

The design process presented unique challenges, particularly for the Mr. Lube location, as the site abutted wetlands to the south resulting in a high water table. As a result, the basement design required extensive planning and engineering considerations to address water management and foundation stability.

Mr. Lube has a steel and hollow core slab structure with silver-insulated metal wall panels. The brand’s blue and yellow signage adds a modern industrial look to the building. Mary Brown’s is a wood-framed building; some other natural materials used are stone, brick, EIFS, and metal siding.

The team worked closely with environmental experts and engineers to ensure that the development met all necessary codes and regulations while maintaining the project’s overall functionality and aesthetic appeal preserving the natural heritage features abutting the site. The design successfully integrates the operational needs of both businesses, while, offering a modern, efficient, and environmentally conscious commercial space for the Greater Sudbury community.
