n Architecture Inc. was commissioned to work on this project as a part of them being the Architect’s of record for the whole plaza. Located in the urban space of Scarborough, the Markham- McNicoll complex is a mixed used development. The site houses a four-story office building, a convenience store, a Tim Horton’s, 2 motor vehicle service shops, and a 4 pump gas station. The site is divided into four quadrants where each building in the complex borders the perimeter of the lot, allowing the facades of the buildings to face the street while creating an internal parking lot for ease of circulation. Integrating various building types was a design challenge accomplished by determining a common ground to create a cohesive aesthetic for the complex.
The four-storey office building follows an L-shaped plan with retail space, office space, and a restaurant. On the main floor, retail and restaurant space are allocated and can be accessed directly from the street and parking lot. The following floors are reserved for office space, keeping this private space separate from the public nature of the main floor. The materiality on the building’s elevation comprises of metal panels and face brick veneer. Additionally, this building is designed with a green roof and rooftop patio for future use.
The central atrium of the building is a design element that creates a dramatic entrance. The main staircase is designed in a hexagonal shape that compliments the similar form of the atrium. Visitors are greeted by the suspended staircase that draws the eye up vertically through the open atrium. The central staircase and atrium present the look and feel of a grand central foyer.
The construction of the building is complete and occupancy is undergoing.
